If I can only accomplish one thing in 2018 it’s this:
Starting Jan 1, I want to write and post 100 days in a row on LinkedIn, then engage with every who took the time to leave a comment or message.
I’ll admit it’s a strange goal, so I want to explain my rationale behind it here.
Why bother writing?
One of my favorite quotes comes from Benjamin Franklin:
“ Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.”
When I look people like Daniel DiPiazza, Neville Medhora, Nat Eliason, Tam Pham, people whom I admire and aspire to be more like, they do two things very well: they do, and they write.
I’ve followed these content creators for years now and it’s incredible to watch each of them start, grow and excel at the various projects that they’ve worked on.
But there was only one reason that I could watch their journeys in the first place: because they wrote about it.
They didn’t wait until they achieved their goals or became masters at their craft.
Instead they documented their journeys, sharing in their stories and experiences so people like me to learn from their mistakes and be encouraged by their successes.
As a result, they’ve motivated me and a countless number of people to be better versions of themselves.
Going back to the question why write at all?
It’s because I contribute.
I want to participate. To be a part of something bigger than myself and hopefully make a difference to others.
Whether it’s one person or ten thousand, I want to share my own stories with the aim of inspiring people the way that I’ve inspired me.
And realistically, there’s only one way to do this: be inspirational.
So here is my (slightly meta) challenge to inspire myself:
Write and post something online 100 days in a row.
By doing so, I hope to accomplish two things:
First, I’ll prove to myself that I can produce content on a consistent basis (something that I’ve struggled with in the past)
Second is to meet others who resonate with what I write, build a community around the ideas and values that we share and hopefully inspire them to take action.
Given this the plan, naturally the next question is:
Where and what do I write?
Why LinkedIn?
A few weeks ago Victor Kung showed me something special.
He had started posting regularly on LinkedIn a few months ago and within just three months he had thousands of new connections and posts that were getting over 100,000 views.
Now, Victor has written online for years now and so I don’t believe I could get similar results in such a short time frame, but that fact that it was even possible astounded me.
At the time of writing, LinkedIn is suffering from a lack of content and so the content producers who are contributing are reaping the benefits of getting more views on their content than any other platform.
When I thought about the topics that I understood well (Facebook advertising and online selling) and the people who would benefit most from that knowledge (founders and marketers), I realized that LinkedIn would be the perfect platform for me to attempt this project.
And so that’s how I decided that I would be posting 100 days on a row on LinkedIn.
What can you do to help?
If you want to help me out on with my New Year’s Resolution, then please know you’re awesome, I really appreciate any help I can get.
The easiest way is just connect with me on Linkedin and leave a like or comment whenever you see a post from me that you feel is worthy.
The idea is simple, the more engagement my posts get, the more LinkedIn will show my posts to people. So every little like or comment counts!
If you really want to go out of your way to help, then let me know. I’ll send you a link over time I post something and you can check it out from there.
Either way though, thanks for reading this far and being a part of my journey — hopefully in 99 days time I’ll be able to report back having successfully posted 100 days in a row!
Justin
PS Here’s my LinkedIn account, connect with me if you haven’t yet!
